Yarram Dairy Business Forum

Tuesday May 24th 2011
The key areas we will address are centred around Managing Dairy Businesses in a Variable Climate (climate in a broad sense, commodity prices, weather etc);

1. Colin Wright, Phillipsons Sale – ‘Managing Farm Finances on the Rollercoaster Ride’ how can dairy farmers best manage the ups and downs in farm income, loan structures, FMD’s, off farm investments etc. Some farms will be without EC payment post June 30. Perhaps include real data from one or more dairy farms to show the reality of the last 10 years, provide examples of different situations and real approaches to managing the ups and downs.

2. John Mulvany On Farm Consulting ‘Managing Farm Business Risk in a Variable Climate’ a checklist of risks to consider in the farm business. As the dairy business environment becomes increasingly volatile what risks need to be assessed and managed? What are the key profit levers? What buffers need to be put in place? What are the key learning’s from other regions that apply to the local situation?

3. Neil Baker, Macalister Demonstration Farm – ‘Understanding the carbon future and how it may impact on dairy farm businesses’ A carbon price, what it means and what dairy farm managers can do to prepare for the future. A case study of GHG emissions from one local farm.
