Australian farmers have always faced a variable climate. So much depends on when the rain falls, not always how much. Recent years have seen variable amounts of rain, often with storm events bringing large amounts of rain in one event.
The weather this year has been vastly different across the Gippsland region and indeed the whole country.
At Alberton, near Yarram it used to be considered 30 inch annual rainfall country (750mm). This year to date there has been over 600mm of rain. In 2006 Alberton received 419mm of rain and last year 582mm fell.
At Shepparton (where the average is 440mm)there has been 753mm to date.
Meanwhile at Fish Creek, a 1000mm year is average, to date there has been 1100mm of rain for the year. 2006 saw just 690mm of rain at Fish Creek.
