Warmer season favoured for most of Australia

The BOM is reporting a warmer outlook for most of Australia.  As we come out of the wettest winter period in 15 years it appears there is plenty of sunshine ahead!

The latest Milking The Weather newsletter from DPI reports;
Pacific cools and a positive Indian Ocean dipole is
developing
• Steady cooling of the central Pacific Ocean has occurred since early winter. However, ocean
temperatures are yet to reach critical thresholds, therefore the weak trend towards La Nina is likely
to continue.
• Trade winds in the central Pacific have strengthened, but the positive Southern
Oscillation Index (SOI) values have remained stable. Cloud patterns are currently close to
normal, and all indicators remain well short of the strong La Niña conditions evident at the same
time last year.
• A La Niña event at the end of 2011 is likely, however, La Nina is typically not as influential
over summer for Victoria.
• On the other hand, a positive IOD that peaks in the spring increases the chance of below average
rainfall over south eastern and central Australia.
