Soil Carbon & Tree Carbon

At the Carbon Farming Initiative briefing yesterday with Richard Eckard , soil carbon and tree carbon were discussed.  Follow the links for a bit more detail.

Dairy Australia's report on soil carbon reinforces the point that soils in the Gippsland area are already high in carbon and best management practices under productive rye grass pastures will maintain relatively high soil carbon levels.

Tree carbon was discussed as there is a lot of discussion in the media about farm land being planted to trees.  Richard emphasised the importance of planting trees for multiple benefits (shade, shelter, riparian management, biodiversity, carbon off set) and understanding the detail in any agreements entered into for carbon offset.

A key message from yesterdays discussions was that individual farmers are unlikely to enter into the Carbon Farming Initiative, instead it would be aggregates or organised groups of farmers that may take part.  It is not a mandatory scheme (like that in NZ) rather a voluntary program.
